Indaba Featured Session - Deerhoof's "Buck and Judy" Orchestra
It’s not every day that you get an email from Deerhoof, but, when you do, it catches your attention.
When Greg Saunier approached us at Indaba (after being inspired by a YouTube video by CueBall9), wanting to do something that “lets anybody join the band,” how could we say no?
Indaba is all about bringing musicians together, so it seemed like the perfect time to launch Indaba Featured Sessions, a hand-picked, no-where-else-can-you-get-this opportunity to collaborate.
Who better to kick-start the party than San Francisco-based indie darling Deerhoof, whose unconventional approach to music makes it tough to label with a genre. Every song with this band is an adventure.
Their latest release "Buck and Judy" from their album Offend Maggie is no different. Following its video release a few weeks ago, we thought that this would be the ideal Deerhoof song to use. We're inviting you to play along on your own drums, replace the guitar part with accordion, write your own lyrics, or maybe even remix everyone's contributions together into a giant orchestra.
THE CHALLENGE... IN TWO PARTS
Part 1. Deerhoof's offering a sheet music arrangement of "Buck and Judy", as well as tabs showing exactly how Deerhoof played the two guitar parts and bass part. This way you can play parts of the song yourselves, replace one of the instruments or add a new one. When you're ready, add your contribution to the tracks section.
Part 2. Deerhoof has already uploaded the drums, bass, two guitars, piano, and vocal from their recording of the song. Use any combination of the uploaded stems (from Deerhoof or any other Indaba member) to create your version of the song. Post the finished version to the mixdown section!
The creative opportunities are endless!
Who knows? You might just inspire the band to play along with you!
